Tonight, our friend, Carl, is coming over to help Reuben redo some of the plumbing in the kitchen. Apparently, the venting for the sink was done wrong, originally. Did you know that it is critically important for your drains to be vented to the outside so that none of the smells come into your house? Something about a build up of gases...blah, blah, blah. You learn a lot when you own your own home. At least I have been. Reuben knows all this stuff already.

actually it isn't really anything to do with the gases.
It is just so the water will go down the pipes. If you tried to empty your sink with no vent it would have to allow air in creating lots of glugging sounds. It would take long and possibly not even work.
It would be like emptying a 2 litre pop bottle. Or it is essentially doing the same thing as when you make two holes in a can of apple juice. If you only make one hole it will not pour out very well......
Agreed that the vent stack maintains atmospheric pressure and prevents "glugging". This would also allow sewer gas into the home- something that is prevented by the water traps.
